Now walk it out, walk it out….

From Alder Konkel’s blog.

Aside from the obvious, “who cares?! Should I be impressed with those scoring higher?” I’m not sure I agree with my rating. A 92! I’m tied with Konkel. And sure, I can walk to get my food, maybe hit up a grocery store, get some coffee, chill at the Union. But as a college student, I can’t *walk* to Target or a store where I’d rather purchase large scale items for my residence. It’s impossible to carry the bags I’d need on the bus, so I’m a slave to friends with cars. Which is sending nice little puffs of pollution back into the air.

Walking to State Street also requires shelling out extra dough. I suppose I can afford the extra few bucks here and there, but for many cash strapped students, we could use lower prices in the area. Too bad the dominant political wisdom is fighting the evil box stores and chain retailers with their lower prices. I will concede that I have no data on that position, only my perceptions and conversations with fellow students; feel free to post links and prove me wrong.

But as for the high prices, that’s OK, because every college student can afford 12 dollar meals at Kabul and a year at Statesider. Right?

  • I also got a 92. And the apartment I move into next week is a 91. The only grocery option on campus is cap center. While it’s great that they deliver, the prices are pretty damn high.

  • I agree. I got a 50, don’t live downtown, yet walk most places. If I live on Willie St (I don’t) it makes no difference if there is a market next door if the prices are out of my range. If I live on East Washington and want a book, but not porno it really does me no good that Red Letter News in near by.

Such a site does little good if it does not take into account where folks actually shop.

  • I got a 91 here in Madison, but only a 32 for back home. I agree that while it might be fun, the site does little good if it doesn’t take into account people’s habits. For instance, the White house gets a 92, but how often do you honestly think the President is walking to the corner coffee shop.
